On A Note Card, I Could Barely Read the Old Handwritten Recipe...
Hi, I’m Tom Pigneri. I’m full-blooded Italian, born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. I've also called Lake Oswego, Oregon my home for sixteen years, returning to Des Moines in 2021. My roots are from Terravecchia, a small village in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Biscotti and pizzelle for my family, have always been the treats for special occasions. Every celebration from birthdays and holidays to weddings called for homemade biscotti and pizzelle among others.
Growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, I’d watch my grandmother make these treats from memory in the small family kitchen. The aroma was amazing. Handfuls of this, pinches of that, mix, roll, bake, slice and bake again. As my grandmother got older, my aunt documented her recipes and process and has passed them on to my generation and beyond.
Sharing with Kids, Friends, Co-workers, Neighbors
Years later, I asked my aunt for the recipes. I wanted to carry on the family tradition making these treats for my kids. My aunt sent me the aged note cards written in grandma's kitchen. Over the years, I've shared biscotti and pizzelle, first with my kids, Isabella and Gianni, and their friends. Then, I started bringing treats to the office for co-workers and passing them out in my neighborhood at Christmas. People were raving about them. I don't know how many times I heard, "You should sell these!"
I guess it finally sunk in because from that, in 2018 - Tratta Dal Forno was born.
I don't consider myself a baker by profession. I think of myself as father and a son and a grandson who bakes, keeping a cherished family tradition alive and now sharing that tradition with you!
I give credit to whatever success I might have in this venture to my grandmother, Margherita (Scalise) Aiello. She brought the old family recipes from Terravechhia to the new world. Without her, none of this would be possible.
All Tratta Dal Forno offerings are handmade by me in small batches with wholesome ingredients. I bake each batch to ensure the highest quality from start to finish and to do my grandmother proud.
